Fight News Australia spoke with Benny Mortimer in the lead up to his FWC Australian Title fight this weekend against reigning title holder 'Diamond' Dan Pauling.Since his introduction to the sport a mere 3 ½ years ago, Ben Mortimer has moulded himself into one of the best MMA fighters to come out of the Gold Coast. His name is synonymous with the emergence and upward trajectory of mixed martial arts in the Eastern states of Australia and is well regarded as one of Australia's most powerful welterweights and an "all round good guy". But good guys still want to win by knock out and that's the aim this weekend when Prophecy Fight Centre and Nutrition Underground's Ben Mortimer challenges Shindo New Breed's Dan Pauling for his Australian FWC belt and title at Nerang PCYC.
The man standing in Mortimer's way this weekend is 'Diamond' Dan Pauling, trained by Kerry Dunne from Shindo New Breed. With a fight record of 6-0, he is the reigning FWC champ after claiming the title with a first round submission over Isaac Tisdale in June, earlier this year. The Shindo young gun has his eyes focused firmly on making it to the top of his game with hopes to one day fight internationally. Undefeated and with a highly regarded ground game and height and reach advantage, Pauling is stepping up to take on the formidable and more experienced Ben Mortimer who has traded with international fighters UFC's Karo Parisyan and LegendFC's Rod McSwain.
Making his MMA debut in 2009 Mortimer has been hungry to succeed taking on four bouts in the last six months of his debut year facing widely respected fighters such as IMA's Silvester Lidicky and future training partner and Prophecy comrade, Ryan Yanz. His two early losses have contributed to the tenacity in which Mortimer approaches his training, continually seeking to perfect the many facets of an elite level martial artist. Currently training with Vince Parry of PUMMA and at Gracie Barra Surfers Paradise, in addition to his daily Prophecy training schedule, Mortimer is looking to maximise his power potential working with former Muay Thai champion and Prophecy trainer, Anthony 'The Hitman' Vella through developing his boxing technique and footwork.
Moving to 5 Rings Dojo in 2010 and working with long time friend and training partner, Jai Bradney along with Roy Luxton and Daniel Lima saw Mortimer progress rapidly. This was evident in his bout against Shane Nix taking out the WKBF Australian MMA Title at Fate MMA in June of the same year and going on to face 27 fight UFC veteran, Karo Parisyan the following month. The Parisyan fight was a highlight for Mortimer, who walked away from the fight with nothing lost but everything gained, "I learnt alot from that fight. That it's not what you can do or how good you are, it only matters what you believe you can do. Self-belief".
Taking almost a year off after his October 10 bout with Rod McSwain, Mortimer came back firing at Nitro 3 to take on the highly anticipated fight against Axis Jiu-Jitsu Academy's Benny Alloway in July this year. After much talk and debate, Mortimer secured the win with a 3rd round arm bar. Taking a well deserved rest after this fight, Mortimer's team got the call for this weekend's FWC Title fight with Dan Pauling. Talking about the match up, the Punish Fight Gear sponsored fighter had this to say of Pauling, "He's great on the ground but stand up, we are at different levels. I know he understands a lot about leverage but I don't think he'll have the strength to capitalise on it". With only 1 fight out of a combined 16 fights between them going to decision, come Main Event this Saturday expect fireworks as Benny 'Knuckles5%er' Mortimer takes on 'Diamond' Dan Pauling for the FWC Australian Welterweight Title.

In the lead up to Brace for War 12 this weekend, Fight News Australia speaks to female Impact MMA fighter, Bec “Rowdy” Hyatt in preparation for her debut bout against Tasmanian grappler and BJJ blue belt, Rhiannon Thompson.
FNA: Thanks for taking the time to speak with us, Bec. What first inspired you to get into martial arts and how old were you when you started training?
Bec: When I was 20 years old, I decided to start training in MMA. This is where I met my husband Dan, who was running class and taking personals. I had no aspirations to compete at that stage, but the more I learnt, the more serious I got and the more I wanted to some day fight.
FNA: For the fans out there, tell us a little bit about yourself, your gym and your team?
Bec: I'm 22 years old, mother of two beautiful children (3 and 10 months) and train out of IMPACT MMA in Brisbane. I have only been at IMPACT for 8 months since moving here from Tasmania but love it and wouldn't rather be anywhere else! Great coaches and a lot of good training partners around my weight!
FNA: In less than 6 days, you will be fighting on Kya Pate's Brace for War in Hobart making your MMA debut. Tell us what's going on in your head right now?
Bec: I'm very excited to finally be able to fight and no better place than in my home state! I've had a full 8 week camp for this fight and could not be anymore prepared. All that dieting or hard training, show time nearly here!
FNA: Your opponent is Rhiannon Thompson from TWCA with a fight record of 1 win by submission from 1 fight and is known for her strong grappling and BJJ. How do you prepare for a fighter like this? What sort of training/preparation do you implement?
Bec: Rhiannon is considered to be the best female fighter in the state and that's exactly why wanted this fight. I was lucky enough to see her debut last year and knew there and then that she was going to be my first opponent. We haven't necessarily prepared for her specifically, training has been well rounded. In saying that, I would love nothing more than for her to try and stand with me!
FNA: You competed in grappling competition, Enemy on the Floor earlier this year. How did you do?
Bec: Fighting to me is all about testing myself. I competed in my first grappling comp back in May at Enemy on the Floor in Toowoomba and placed second, losing in the final against a girl who I had already tapped out by armbar in the first round.
FNA: What's next for Bec Hyatt after Brace for War next week?
Bec: I have a few potential fights lined up for the rest of the year, but the main focus is this coming Saturday. Other than that, to continue to develop my skills set. I want to fight regularly and show the Australian MMA scene that women can fight and we can do it better than the guys sometimes! I also have aspirations of fighting overseas in Asian promotions, as I know they have a lot of female fighters my weight!
FNA: How did your fight name “Rowdy” come about?
Bec: My nickname was given to me by my husband when we first met and it stuck I guess can be a bit full on at times, a bit rowdy, some people say i should of been born a boy for this exact reason haha.
FNA: Your married to Australian MMA welterweight, Dan Hyatt and the mother of two children, how do you manage your training and parenting responsibilities?
Bec: I have been training for two years now in submission grappling, freestyle wrestling, boxing and muay thai, however an eight month period of that I was pregnant with my second child, so technically would be less then two years. Training full time and parenting two young children (8 months and 3 years) sometimes proves problematic, but we make it work because we love this sport so much! At the moment we are living comfortably so i dont need to find work, i am just lucky I'm able to focus entirely on getting better as a fighter full time. I was supposed to have my first fight mid way through last year but fell pregnant.
FNA: Any words of wisdom you would like to share to aspiring female MMA fighters?
Bec: Find a gym with as many male fighters around your weight as possible! I'm lucky enough to have 5 or 6 training partners within 5 kilos of me, which is ideal for my sparring and competitive work! Its unrealistic to think you will find a gym with a lot of female fighters, so don't be scared away by that fact. If you want to fight, get your rounds in with the guys as much as possible!
FNA: Thank you for taking the time to talk to us today, before we close, is there any fans or supporters you'd like to give a shout out to?
Bec: Thank you to my sponsors Suburban Armour Clothing, Pillfreak, Erkules Supplement Nutrition, Cover Up Upholstery and all my trainers at IMPACT MMA for the preparation and guidance. Also a big thank you to Jodie and Adam Richardson for looking after my two boys so I can train twice a day leading into this fight, without them, I wouldn't be as half prepared as I am!

Lenui Continues Winning Streak with KO over Muir at Nitro 4
Nitro 4 went off with a bang Saturday night as Felise "The FobFather" Leniu ended Joe Muir's 7 KO winning streak with a stealthy jab and overhand right in the main event of Nitro 4 on Saturday night.
Joe "The Massacre" Muir came into this fight the definite favourite but in the opening seconds, Felise had surprised the Queensland crowd moving in to aggressively trade early with Muir. Muir from 5 Rings Dojo countered attempting a single leg takedown in response. Lenui impeded the attempt and caught Muir as he threw solidly moving out of the exchange landing a damaging kick to Muir's head. Muir countered taking Leniu to the canvas where the Sydneysider worked of his back landing an up-kick to Muir's face with "The Massacre" dropping hammer fists from standing position as Felise defended from the ground.
Ref, Tony Hickmott stood the fighters up and battle is re-engaged with brutal trading from both men as Muir finished the exchanges with chipping kicks to Lenui's inner thigh and making use of every grapple to edge elbows against Lenui's unguarded face. In response Lenui takes Muir to the canvas with Muir landing in dominant position and taking full mount with Lenui rolling and giving Muir his back twice in the first round with Muir failing to maximise the opportunity. Muir moved in for his assault throwing solid strikes to the head and ribs of Lenui, who never took a backward step landing an uppercut to Muir's chin and rallying to finish Round 1 with determined striking against the cage.
Both fighters entered round two looking decidedly gassed after such a hard hitting opening round.. Muir begins proceedings with a kick, jab combo as he moves into the clinch where Lenui returned fire with elbows against the jaw of the 102kg Gold Coaster. Against the cage, Muir landed knees to Felise's middle with both fighters throwing down in the exchange that finished with a stealthy jab and overhand right by Felise "The FobFather' Lenui dropping Muir to the canvas in 2:06 minute of the second round to claim his 6th straight win.
In the co-main event, IMA Hervey Bay’s Greg Atzori made quick work of WBC Academy wrestler, Gokhan Turkyilmaz with a late first round submission. Gokhan came out looking for the takedown early and struggled to get Atzori to the canvas as they grappled against the cage. Atzori worked hard in the clinch landing a solid knee to Turkyilmaz who responded securing the takedown on Atzori. The IMA fighter worked well off his back, scrambling to his feet and locking in a guillotine choke that saw Gokhan tapping in the 3:58 of the first round.
