Since losing the Nitro welterweight title 12 months ago to Anton Zafir, Sydney’s Corey Nelson has been vocal about his desire for a rematch with the Whitsunday based fighter.
Widely regarded as one of the top welterweights in the country, Nelson (17-5-1), who found himself on the wrong side of the judge’s scorecards that night, accepted the challenge on just two weeks notice. Following the loss, ‘Major’ has racked up two impressive first round knockouts over local top tier welterweights Callan Potter and Steve Micallef.
Apart from an appearance at the Kudo World Championships, Zafir (7-1) had been inactive since what was arguably the biggest upset of the year, until just last weekend at Nitro 13. There, ‘The Professor’ returned to action and put away Ryan Heketa with punches in the first round to successfully defend the title for the first time.
With both fighters recently coming off impressive first round TKO victories, the time couldn’t be better for a rematch. With a proper training camp, could Nelson pull out the victory or would Zafir again have his hand raised?
