Advance Martial Arts fighter Jacob “J Money” Mahony successfully defended his XFC bantamweight title last night at Xtreme Fighting Championships (XFC) 21, while Jessy “Jess” Rose-Clark (pictured) scored the biggest win of her short career to capture the women’s bantamweight title.
We start our recap in the main event bout between Jacob Mahony and New Zealand challenger Evander Agnew.
When the fight began, 25 year-old Mahony wasted no time in attempting to getting the fight to the ground where both guys battled for position. Mahony ended up taking his opponent’s back where he was able to stretch him out and secure the rear-naked choke submission to get the tap only 1:55 into the fight.
With the win, Mahony defended his XFC bantamweight title which he captured back in February. The win was also his sixth in his last seven fights and takes his record to 11-8-1d.
In an entertaining women’s bantamweight title fight, Integrated MMA women’s fighter Jessy “Jess” out-struck and out-worked her opponent, BJJ Black belt Kate Da Silva. Jessy started the fight landing a left-right combo before Da Silva quickly made her intentions clear attempting to take the fight to the ground. Jessy successfully defended and stuffed the takedown as the two clinched against the cage. Da Silva landed some short forearm strikes but as the two separated, Jessy’s power-punching started to turn the tide in her favour. Jessy got a late takedown, but was forced to defend as Da Silva attempted lock up an armbar from her back as the round ended.
The fight ended up going to the ground more in the second round, but given the opportunity Jessy chose to stand back up rather than play Da Silva’s game. There Jessy was in control, and Da Silva’s takedown attempts became predictable and desperate. Late in the round, Jessy had Da Silva on the defensive with heavy strikes from the top and as the fights continued Da Silva turned her back. The punches continued and the referee was left with no choice but to halt the contest.
An impressive performance form Jessy who takes home her second title belt in as many fights after previously defeating Zoie Shreweis in February to capture the Unarmed Combat Unleashed belt. The win took Jessy’s record to 4-1 while Da Silva dropped to 7-2.
In a battle between two former amateur title holders within the promotion, Ben Quarmby really made a statement that his coming for the pro welterweight title as he submitted James Klingner early in the first-round. Based out of the MMA United gym in New South Wales, Quarmby quickly got a body-lock slam on his opponent. There he was able to transition to the back to lock-up the rear-naked choke submission only 33-seconds into the bout. Very impressive performance from Quarmby who has won all three of his fights inside the XFC with a first-round submission.
Also in professional bouts on the card, Infinity Martial Arts fighter Damien Fraser and Robert Carruthers from Advance Martial Arts exchanged positioning on the ground before Fraser locked up a guillotine choke to secure the tap. Alex MacDonald slumped to a second straight loss in a short but entertaining gslug-fest against New Zealand opponent Pumau Campbell. MacDonald got the better of the early exchanges, before Campbell raised the tempo and connected while MacDonald was against the cage to get the KO win.
Earlier in the night, Nix Agulto defended his XFC amateur bantamweight title with a second-round TKO stoppage over Dan O’Rourke while Ty Duncan captured the vacant XFC amateur welterweight title with a first-round KO over late replacement Peter Moon from New Zealand.
A mixture of amateur and professional bouts, XFC 21 was held at the Mansfield Tavern in Queensland, Australia on 14 June.
XFC 22 will be held on November 1 with the promotion announcing that New Zealand fighter Shane Young will return for another shot at XFC featherweight champion Adrian Rodriguez after Rodriguez controversially edged the first encounter back in February. This time the bout is set for five rounds.
