Melbourne based Hex Fight Series tonight holds the first event in a cage since the cage ban was lifted in Victoria. The event features a lightweight battle between local fighter Nick Patterson and former UFC fighter Ben Wall who will be looking at rebounding from his recent back-to-back losses.
The semi-main event pits outspoken Western Australian fighter Steven Kennedy against Victorian Callan Potter.

- Nick Patterson vs Ben Wall
Round 1: Patterson straight away on the front foot with Wall attempting countering with a takedown attempt. Wall pressuring Patterson as the former UFC fighter looks to take the back standing. Patterson turns back into Wall and lands a nice knee to the mid-section. Wall continues to press the action against the cage. Just as it looks like Patterson was going to escape, Wall immediately pressed his opponent back against the cage. Patterson landing short strikes while defending the takedown. Patterson separates as he misses with the uppercut. Patterson jumping around with hands at his waist, landing a nice short right before the end of the round.
Round 2: Wall straight away shoots for the double leg. Defended by Patterson but the local fighter is pressed against the cage by Wall. Patterson uses a standing kimura attempt to give him some room. Wall immediately pressures the fight against the cage. Wall closes his hands around Patterson which allows him to secure the takedown. Patterson shocks Wall with a triangle choke, however Wall was able to escape, and counter with an armbar attempt. Patterson remains calm to escape the submission attempt. Wall immediately pressures the fight against the cage. A small scramble initiated by Patterson ends the second round.
Round 3: Sweat now playing a factor as Patterson was able to slide out of the early single leg takedown attempts by Wall. Patterson comes forward with strikes but makes the mistake of clinching with Wall who pressures the Patterson against the cage. Wall again grips his hands together which allows him to secure the takedown. Wall moves to side-control, and secures Patterson’s arm to move to mount. Patterson regains guard and gets back to his feet. Patterson separates and lands a body shot followed by a jumping knee that skimmed Wall’s face. Patterson dropping his hands, encouraging Wall to hit him. Wall closes the distance as the round ends.

- Steven Kennedy vs Callan Potter
Round 1: Early leg kicks from Potter to start the fight off. Kennedy missed with a high kick. Potter continues to land the low-lick to Kennedy’s lead leg. A sloppy takedown attempt from Kennedy was sprawled by Potter. Kennedy lands a nice left hook as Potter looked to step away. Kennedy starts to increase his tempo. A short left dropped Potter. Kennedy immediately capitalised, secured the back where he put Potter to sleep with the rear-naked choke.

- Rodolfo Marques vs Gabriel Solorio
Round 1: Marques closed the distance early as he pushed Solorio against the cage. Marques gets the takedown however Solorio worked straight back to his feet. Marques working for the takedown against the cage before Solorio was able to create some distance to circle out. Solorio lands some strikes as Marques secures another takedown. Solorio pops back to his feet. With 30 seconds left, Solorio landed a massive overhand right that dropped Marques. Solorio straight away looked to capitalise with Marques doing just enough to survive the round.
Round 2: After the scare at the end of the first, Marques starts the second round cautiously. Solorio again clipped Marques with the right however Marques shrugged it off to press his opponent against the cage. Solorio circled out and straight away went on the front foot, looking to land that knockout blow. Marques closed the distance again and after a bit of a battle was able to secure the double leg to take the fight down. Marques passed to mount but with only five second left, time was not on his side.
Round 3: A low blow from Marques halted the action early in the last round. Solorio recovered and started on the front foot when the fight resumed. Solorio was over aggressive, which allowed Marques to drop levels to secure the takedown. Solorio regained guard where he remained calm, working back to his feet. Solorio again lands a big right that rocked Marques. Marques immediately went for that the takedown which he secured straight into mount. From there the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black-belt landed punches from the top. Solorio regained guard but Marques finished the round on top.

- Charlie Alaniz vs Matthew George
Round 1: Alaniz straight away begins with a flurry of punches as George does well to avoid the early takedown. Alaniz again closes the distance where he got the slam. Alaniz went for a rear-naked choke, but George scrambled back to his feet. Alaniz went for a leg-lock however George showed great defense to escape. Alaniz lands a series of one-two punches which forced George to shoot for a takedown. It was defended by Alaniz who was able to free himself. He closed the distance and got another takedown. He was able to move straight to mount where he unloaded with big punches and elbows.

- Raphael Berthet vs Jeshua McPhail (Fight underway)
Round 1: Berthet on the front foot and landed a straight left early in the fight before the fighters clinched against the cage. Landed a knee from inside the clinch. Berthet picked the ankle up and got the fight down to the canvas where McPhail immediately worked back to his feet. Berthet wrestled the fight back to the ground however McPhail again popped back up to his feet. McPhail attacked with a single leg to get his opponent down and after a scramble the Sinosic-Perosh fighter secured full mount. Berthet turned and gave away his back and used the back door to escape back to his feet.
Round 2: Early leg kicks from McPhail before the fighters clinched against the cage where they battled for position for a large portion of the round. It’s McPhail with his back against the cage with neither fighter doing much. Referee warns both fighters for some action. With just under a minute to go in the round, the referee separated the fighters. A back-spinning elbow from Berthet missed it’s mark as the two again clinched against the cage.
Round 3: The fighters exchanging early punches with neither landing anything significant. Berthet landed a nice straight left before McPhail countered back with a series of punches. Berhtet coming forward but choosing to throw jabs instead of combinations. Berthet then rocked McPhail with punches. The Melbourne based Frenchman immediately looked to capitalise and further shots that rocked his opponent standing, forced the referee to halt the contest.
