Women’s MMA fighter Claire Fryer has signed on to compete in the Xtreme Fighting Championships International strawweight tournament, with her debut in the promotion scheduled to occur in Brazil in May. Exact venue or date of fight is unknown at this stage.
XFC International is not to be confused with local Australian promotion, Xtreme Fighting Championships.
The opportunity came Fryer’s way via her American manager Wade Hampel from Big Fight Management. “I told him I felt absolutely fantastic about it,” Fryer commented when contacted by Fight News Australia about the signing.
Training out of the Gamebred Combat Club in Brisbane, Fryer has a 4-1 record with her lone loss coming at the hands of current UFC fighter Alex Chambers who defeated Fryer back in 2010. Since that loss, Fryer has scored back-to-back first-round stoppages over Japanese Rina Tomita and in her last outing against Melanie Malone back in November 2013.
Asked about her goals going forward, Fryer has set her sights solely on impressing her new promotion.
“My focus right now is on this first fight but I intend to win the tournament and make my mark with XFC. I’m also looking forward to showing the Brazilian crowd what a vegan fighter can do,.”
With match-ups hard to find in Australia due to the talent pool in her weight division not being that deep, Fryer is looking forward to testing her skills internationally however is watching her back at any up-and-coming fighters coming through the ranks.
“It has been frustrating not having that many opponents at my weight locally, but there’s a few Australian promoters now pushing our weight division. I’m looking forward to seeing who comes up the ranks!”
No official word on who else is expected to participate in the strawweight tournament.
