Mixed Martial Arts Federation of Australia (MMAFA) has been formed and joined as a member of the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF).
The president of MMAFA will be Joe Minehan who comes into the position with a Judo background. Supporting him will be experienced MMA referee Cameron Quinn, Olympic Judoka Stewart Brain and XFC promoter Justin Lawrence.
“We support the IMMAF in growing the sport to enable cohesive global competition. We also applaud and support the aim of the JMMAF to have an official place for MMA in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics,” Minehan commented via the news article.
IMMAF was founded in Sweden and launched back in 2012 with the support of the UFC. The federation lists it’s purpose to further the development and recognition of the sport by enabling international competition through the organisation of national MMA federations with the ultimate aim of making this an Olympic sport.
It has hosted amateur world championships and the next world championships are scheduled to take place in just over a weeks time as part of the UFC Fight Week in Las Vegas.
