Tom Wright announces UFC will return to Australia later this year

Tom Wright, the General Manager for UFC Operations in Canada, Australia and New Zealand confirmed that the promotion will return for another show in Australia this calendar year with exact date and host city yet to be confirmed.

Wright made the remarks at the post-fight press conference which Fight News Australia attending following UFC Fight Night 85 on Sunday. The event took place at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in Queensland, Australia.

“We will be back in this market, in Australia later this year. It’s a little premature to announce when and where but Australia will host another UFC event in 2016,” Wright informed the press at the post-fight press-conference.

With the UFC still battling the cage ban in Perth, it leaves Sydney or Melbourne as the likely two candidate cities to host the next event. Sydney has not hosted an UFC event since November 2014, however the promotion may want to make a quick return to Melbourne while the iron is hot following a very successful UFC 193 event late last year.

The event will be the eleventh event on Australian and New Zealand soil for the promotion who first held an event here back in February 2010.

New South Wales leads the way having hosted four events to date with Queensland just behind with three events. Victoria, South Australia and New Zealand have hosted one each.

Started Martial Arts training after watching Mr Miyagi and Daniel-son in Karate Kid back in 1987. By the time MMA arrived many years later, I was hooked. Coverage of local MMA was via scarce posts on forums like the Underground and Sherdog. I embarked on covering the sport in 2002 and since then have written thousands of articles for both print and online media, before branching out and starting Fight News Australia in 2010. Outside the site, I dream of riding in an F1 car.
