Phuket Top Team based Aussie Gokhan Turkyilmaz is set to make his Brace return next month against the undefeated JJ Van Aswegen in the semi-finals of the promotion’s 2014 Featherweight Championship Tournament.

Turkyilmaz steps in for another established local name in CFC veteran Josh Payne who has been sidelined from the tournament through injury.

Brace 29 takes place at the North Sydney Leagues Club on Saturday, Aug. 9, and will be headlined by a welterweight semi-final matchup between SPMA’s Steve Micallef and Regan Wilson from the Lange’s MMA gym.

A five-time Brace veteran, Turkyilmaz (12-10) will take a two-fight win streak into the tournament after stopping Alex MacDonald in 29 seconds at Nitro 11, and most recently outpointing Vaughn Donayre as a lightweight at Global Fighting Championship 3 in Dubai. We last saw the ‘Pitbull’ inside the promotion at Brace 23 where he knocked out Canadian Kevin Manderson in just 26 seconds.

With three stoppage victories under his belt, Van Aswegen (3-0) has looked impressive in his short MMA career to date, which he kick off with a first round submission win over Adam Corbett at Brace 22. After submitting Kris Spence in his second outing, the Beston-Gracie Newcastle product went on to put away former featherweight top contender Luke Standing with strikes at Brace 26.

Brace 29 caps off a massive weekend in a Sydney for the promotion with the other group of semi-final matchups scheduled for the night before (Friday, Aug. 8), also to take place at the North Sydney Leagues Club. The 2014 season tournament will come to a head in late November at the AIS Arena in Canberra and will feature six title fights from the bantamweight division through to light heavyweight.

    Fight Card:

    • Steve Micallef vs Regan Wilson – Welterweight Semi-Final
    • JJ Van Aswegen vs Gokhan Turkyilmaz – Featherweight Semi-Final
    • Gerhard Voigt vs William Namoa – Middleweight Semi-Final
    • Edwin Arana vs Jordan Lucas – Bantamweight Semi-Final
