It was a short and disappointing night for Megan Anderson.
The Australian featherweight failed to clutch UFC gold after being submitted by champion Amanda Nunes in the first round at UFC 259.
Anderson was in trouble from the moment Nunes connected. A big right hand stunned Anderson and Nunes followed up with another right and a heavy leg kick. A half-hearted takedown attempt from Anderson allowed Nunes to put her down and take her back. Cinching up a triangle from behind, Nunes relinquished the neck and isolated Anderson’s arm, extending it for the tap which came at 2:03.
After back-t0-back victories, Anderson drops to 11-5, making her 3-3 in her UFC career. The dual featherweight and bantamweight champion Nunes, 21-4, extends her current win-streak to 12, and the victory makes her second successful featherweight title defence.
UFC 259, headlined by a light heavyweight title fight between Jan Blachowicz and Israel Adesanya, took place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Sunday, March 7 (AU).
