Bernardo ‘Trekko’ Magalhaes is the new AFC lightweight champion following a five round majority points decision win over Kieran Joblin in the AFC 10 main event on Saturday night.
The event took place at the Melbourne Pavilion in Victoria and was streamed live at the Fight News Australia Live Fights page.
Round one saw Joblin have some early success in the standup, connecting with a well timed knee and solid leg kicks, however ‘Trekko’ wasted no time taking the kiwi to the canvas and controlling him from the top position for the remainder of the round.
Much of the same continued in the second round with Magalhaes again finding himself on top, this time due to a slip from Joblin. Joblin stayed busy countering Magalhaes’s grappling while also landing short shots from the bottom, which opened up a cut on the jiu jitsu specialist.
Unlike the first two rounds, round three was primarily a standup battle. Both fighters had success on the feet as Magalhaes took centre ring and push the pace. A late takedown attempt from Joblin was unsuccessful with Magalhaes easily defending to keep the fight upright.
Much like the first round, Joblin began the fourth period strong, landing a well placed jab and working the Thai clinch. From there however, ‘Trekko’ moved to the Kiwi’s back before dumping him to the canvas. And that’s where the action remained with Magalhaes controlling Joblin from the top once again. Joblin stayed busy throughout however, with effective short elbows to the face of Magalhaes, and did well to regain half guard after getting mounted.
The final round of the lightweight title fight was contested on the feet with Joblin coming forward with combinations as Magalhaes looked to stay just out of range. The Kiwi landed some clean shots including a right hook, but lacked the power that he displayed in the earlier stages of the fight.
In the co-main event, accomplished wrestlers Amin Yaqubi and Talgat Ilyasov, both on debut Saturday night, fought a fast paced battle which ended in a second round submission win for Ilyasov. The Dominance MMA fighter looked eager to stick to his strengths and take the fight to the canvas. Yaqubi, the taller of the two, on the other hand looked content to keep the fight standing and trade strikes. Ultimately, it was Ilyasov who controlled the fight, out-wrestling his opponent with the end coming early in the second round via an arm triangle choke. Although Yaqubi clearly tapped on several occasions, the ref seemed oblivious and only stopped the encounter once he was left unconscious.
Meanwhile, twenty two year-old Daniel ‘Grass Hopper’ Way and Joe ‘Massacre’ Muir met in an entertaining back and forth middleweight clash which saw Way get the win early in the third round by a doctors stoppage due to a cut. Muir came forward throughout the clash as he looked to land power punches while also using his strength advantage to wrestle the taller Way to the canvas on a number of occasions. Way put together a more technical striking approach and by the end of the second round had left Muir bloodied up. The end came early in the third with Way dropping Muir with a knee before unleashing a flurry of punches. Muir showed good resilience to survive, regain his composure, then drag Way to the canvas. However the ref soon intervened and the doctor was forced to call it off.
Peter ‘Bulldog’ Davenport from the Elite Training Centre in Geelong put in a dominant performance against a relaxed looking Luis Dabu, who was on debut, to win by submission in the first round. Davenport was on the front foot from the start as Dabu looked content to counter strike. Dabu landed a leg kick and Davenport returned fire with a right hand before he muscled the former amateur boxer up against the ropes. From there the larger looking Davenport connected with body shots and elbows. Dabu turned and escaped backwards however he ate a knee in the process. Davenport landed another right hand before dumping Dabu to the canvas, he gained mount soon after. Dabu did well to explode and power out and they were standing once again. Davenport connected with another knee before locking up a standing guillotine choke. He dropped to the ground and transitioned to the ankle where he forced the tap with a leg lock.
In a middleweight contest, the Kit Dale trained Mitch O’Dowd, 20, submitted Victory Martial Arts Academy’s Brent Masterman early in the first round. After slamming Masterman to the canvas, O’Dowd locked up the armbar, hanging through the ropes, and got the win.
Also on the night, Chris Lindner, 30, from the Victory Martial Arts Academy and 34 year-old Nick Davis of the Northern MMA gym met in a middleweight bout. The bout began with Davis opting for an overhand right, instead of touching gloves. Davis took the fight to the canvas as Lindner covered up from the strike, and that’s where the clash remained with Davis controlling the contest from back control before stopping a flattened out Lindner with strikes to the head late in the round.
Twenty four year-old Alex ‘Doctor Octopus’ Anthony from the Gamebred gym in Brisbane scored a controversial first round submission win over 18 year-old Extreme MMA product Nikos Trepca. Anthony used his height advantage on the feet, getting the better of the standup and opening Trepca up. Trepca eventually got the fight to the canvas, however Anthony locked up a slick armbar and the ref stepped in and separated the two as Trepca was looking to escape. Trepca immediately protested the stoppage with the ref later stating that the fight was stopped due to the arm being hyper-extended.
Luke Catubig from Absolute MMA made short work of James Londrigan in the second bout of the night with a quick fire 10 second knockout, with some controversy. Catubig charged forward after eating a leg kick and landed a left hook straight right combination which sent Londrigan crashing backwards to the canvas. Catubig followed him there and unleashed a number of punches before the ref jumped in and waved the fight off. Londrigan immediately protested the ref’s decision following the stoppage.
Opening proceedings on the night was a welterweight bout between on debut fighters Dan Ginnane and Luke Falzon. Eighteen year-old Ginnane proved too good in every area for Falzon, controlling the encounter with takedowns and dominant top control before stopping Falzon with strikes from mount late in the second round.
