Australian Matthew Frincu’s unbeaten run in World Series of Fighting (WSOF) ended on the weekend as he was stopped by Abubakar Nurmagomedov on the preliminary card of WSOF 30.

The event took place at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Abubakar, the step-brother of UFC star Khabib Nurmagomedov, shot in for an early double-leg takedown where he landed short strikes from the top, unable to pass the Aussie’s guard. Frincu escaped to his feet and a hard low kick left Nurmagomedov off balance. The Russian fighter bounced back to his feet but was met by a hard knee from Frincu.

In the second-round, Nurmagomedov again secured the double-leg to put Frincu on his back. This time, Nurmagomedov stood inside the guard and delivered heavy punches as Frincu struggled to get off the cage. The Russian stepped over the leg and continued landing big hooks that allowed Nurmagomedov to take the back. The punches continued and with Frincu unable to roll over and the punishment continuing, the referee had no option but to stop the contest, 3:05 into the second round.

The win takes Abubakar Nurmagomedov’s record to an impressive 12-1 (WSOF 3-0), while Frincu drops to 7-2 (WSOF 2-1).

Formerly from the Gold Coast, Frincu relocated to USA in 2014 and began training at the Arizona Combat Sports facility. It was Frincu’s first loss on American soil after previously winning his last three fights.

In the main event of WSOF 30, David Branch retained his middleweight title with a unanimous decision win over Clifford Starks while former UFC welterweight contender Jon Fitch claimed the WSOF welterweight title, defeating Joao Zeferino by a unanimous decision.
