The Australian contingent competing on day three of the IMMAF World Championships have been eliminated with Troy Fumo, Jordan Thomas, Patrick Best, and Auryn Parmley losing their quarter-final match-ups.

Fumo fought bravely however lost all rounds in a unanimous decision to Russian athlete Farkhod Rakhmonaliev in the men’s strawweight division while Sydney’s Jordan Thomas came up against the 2018 world championship silver medallist, Finnish Marko Sarasjarvi, and also lost a unanimous decision.

In the light-heavyweight division, Patrick Best lost via TKO to the intimidating Russian, Dzhamal Mezhidov, who is a 2018 world champion and sported an impressive amateur record coming into these championships. In the same division, a gallant Auryn Parmley was submitted by Magomed Shakhrudinov from Russia to end his competition run.

The lone remaining competitor for Australia will be Erin Carter in the junior lightweight championships. With only two competitors entered in the draw, she will commence on the finals day and face Russia’s Daria Pirogova.

It was better news across the pond, with New Zealand’s Ferguson Jenkins and Michelle Montague progressing to the medal rounds.

Jenkins submitted Irish fighter Daniel O’Sullivan in the middleweight division and moves on to face another Irish fighter in Paul Buckley, in the semi-finals.

2019 IMMAF lightweight champion, Michelle Montague progressed to the semi-finals with a submission victory against Nina Kharinova from Russia. Montague, competing in the featherweight division this time, will now face the dangerous Sabrina Laurentina De Sousa in the semi-finals.

De Sousa is the 2019 IMMAF featherweight world champion and notably defeated Montague just last year at the European open tournament. Montague will be hoping to get one back when they meet on Thursday.

Abraham Paku was eliminated from the heavyweight tournament, losing to the 2019 world championships runner-up, Shamil Kuramagomedov via TKO.
