Queensland’s Elliot Compton has come up short in his ONE Championship return.
“The Dragon” went down to 2nd-degree BJJ black belt Allisson Barbosa by first-round submission in a lightweight MMA tilt at ONE Friday Fights 3 on February 3.
The 34-year-old started brightly at the Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, tagging the lead leg of Barbosa with calf kicks. But the Brazilian was not deterred and landed a punch early that opened a cut on Compton’s face.
Barbosa soon landed a takedown and immediately started searching for a head and arm choke.
Compton – a BJJ brown belt in his own right – defended diligently but soon gave up the mount as Barbosa sunk in the choke.
The referee stepped in to save Compton at 2:28 of the first round and while he was in a bad position, the Aussie did not appear to have tapped.
Compton protested the controversial stoppage, but to no avail, as Barbosa was awarded the victory as well as a US$10,000 performance bonus – courtesy of ONE Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong.
Barbosa was impressive in his ONE debut, and the Phuket Fight Club representative improved his record to 20-8 in victory.
In defeat, Compton fell to 1-1 in his MMA tenure, following a 46-11 run in Muay Thai and kickboxing.
The Team Compton flag bearer previously fought under the ONE banner from 2018-2020 in the striking arts, going 1-3 during that stretch.
In the main event, Petsukumvit Boi Bangna also made a huge impression in his ONE debut, when he took a close but unanimous decision win over Chorfah Tor.Sangtiennoi in an all-out war.
