Aussie featherweight Michael Tobin (12-2) suffered his second consecutive defeat on the weekend, falling to local fighter Mike Grundy (10-1) who snatch the victory in the third round via a guillotine choke.
A Commonwealth Games bronze medal winning wrestler, Grundy went straight to his bread and butter in the opening two frames, securing textbook takedowns on the Aussie. And that’s where the action stayed for the remainder of the rounds with Grundy controlling top position. A BJJ brown belt, Tobin stayed active from the bottom, doing well to attack with short shots and avoiding any major damage from the Brit while also searching for submissions.
A failed takedown attempt from Grundy allowed Tobin to capitalise and score a takedown of his own in the opening minute of the final frame. It was short lived however as Grundy showed good strength to power out and find top position once again. The end came in the closing minute of the fight with the English fighter subbing Tobin with a guillotine choke from full mount.
ACB 65 took place early Sunday morning Australian time at Sheffield Arena in South Yorkshire, England. In the main event, Russian Batraz Agnaev upset Thiago Silva, stopping the former UFC fighter with punches in the second round.
